I am very grateful that I was selected to be this year’s junior captain. I joined Royal Belfast Golf Club at 8 years old. That year Andrew gave me a handicap of 72. I only played five holes with my Dad once a week and it was my goal to beat my friends’ points and win the competition so that my handicap would get lower every week. My handicap has been coming down steadily ever since and I am now playing off 6. It’s taken seven years so far and I’m aiming to be off scratch before I’m 18.

Apart from playing golf, during the summer holidays I have enjoyed playing pool in the junior room with my friends, searching for golf balls on the course and practising different shots in the practise ground. Sundays are the best time during the golf season, when the club run a 5, 9 and 18 hole competition for juniors, this is a great time to interact with other young players and make some friends. If you play well and get your handicap down there are teams to play on each year. Match play is a completely different game and gives you the chance to play other courses.

Andrew Ferguson (our golf pro) has given me great tips, and this has helped me improve my game immensely. He is always there on Sundays to encourage the juniors and runs coaching sessions during the winter.

2020-21 has been a difficult year because of Covid-19 but now the course is open again, I hope we will get back to normal during this season and maybe even play a few matches like The Fred Daly.

I’m looking forward to helping the new juniors with their putting in the summer so they can improve in the future.
