Respecting the Traditions of the Game

Golf in Ireland is welcoming and sociable, but dress and etiquette remain important at historic clubs. At The Royal Belfast Golf Club, visitors are asked to observe traditional standards in keeping with the spirit of the game — details that help preserve the Club’s character and the comfort of everyone in it. With a little preparation, this shouldn’t feel intimidating.

On the Course

Suitable attire includes golf shirts, collared shirts, roll-neck tops, tailored trousers, chinos, golf skirts, skorts and tailored golf shorts. Golf shoes should be worn throughout the round.

In the Clubhouse

Clothing should be clean, dry and neat, with hats and caps removed indoors; golf shoes worn on the course are not permitted inside, so bring a change of footwear. Denim, collarless T-shirts, flip flops, wet or dirty clothing, and shorts in formal areas are not permitted. When in doubt, choose the more considered option — dress as you would for a respected private club.

Clubhouse Etiquette

Mobile phones should be kept on silent, with calls taken in the Atrium at the players’ entrance. Smoking, including e-cigarettes, isn’t permitted in the clubhouse, and players should arrive at the first tee at least ten minutes before their starting time.

Prepare Well and Enjoy the Day

Pack smart golf clothing and appropriate clubhouse footwear, allow time to change, and the rest of the visit takes care of itself.
