Royal Belfast, set at Craigavad on Belfast Lough, is one of those experiences: a calm, thoughtful counterpoint to a links-heavy itinerary, just 20 minutes from Belfast city centre.
A Harry Colt Parkland Course
Designed in 1925 by Harry S. Colt with Walker Cup player W.A. Murray, much of the original layout remains unchanged nearly a century on. Measuring 6,309 yards, the course isn’t defined by length but by balance and subtlety — narrow landing areas and well-placed hazards reward careful positioning, controlled approach play and a steady touch on the greens.
Memorable Holes on Belfast Lough
The short par-3 4th (142 yards) looks inviting but is tightly guarded by bunkers. The par-4 8th demands discipline from the tee, with out-of-bounds along the left. The par-4 9th, at 408 yards along Belfast Lough, is the course’s most difficult hole and one of its clearest expressions of setting meeting strategy.
Recognised Quality
Royal Belfast has been previously named IGTOA Parkland Golf Course of the Year and Best Parkland Golf Course in Ulster by the Golfer’s Guide to Ireland — recognition of a course shaped by heritage as much as design.
